THM Taco Salad (make your own Healthy Seasoning)

Oh how I love to eat. I do. *sigh* Food is one of my passions. If I can make it look good, taste good and be good for me I am a happy, happy girl! That’s what happens when I make this simple, yet delicious Taco Salad recipe. It’s SF, GF and THM friendly for all you Trim Healthy Mama’s.  Another amazing thing about this recipe is that it’s so easy some of your kiddos could make it. Oh yeah!!

First lets make some Taco seasoning from scratch. If you’ve never made it before, don’t be intimidated. It’s super easy and way better for you than the packet stuff. Make a decent amount and store it for next time you’ll want it. I double the recipe below. Trust me, after having this taco’s will be on your dinner list often. Making your own taco seasoning and breaking away from store bought packets is freeing! 🙂

Plus, this recipe can be altered to your liking. So have fun with it! Here’s a starter for you.

Taco Seasoning:

1/2 cup Chili Powder

1/4 cup Onion Powder

1/8 cup Ground Cumin

1 Tbsp. Paprika

1 Tbsp. Sea Salt

*Three Tbsp. homemade Taco seasoning equals one 4 oz. package of Taco Seasoning mix. For Taco’s you would use approx. 3Tbsp. per. pound of meat*

What you’ll need:

This recipe makes enough for my family of 7.

2 lbs. ground meat

(I use lean ground turkey but you can use beef)

1 onion diced smal

1 clove of garlic chopped small

(this is optional. I love it with this though!)

6 Tbsp. Taco Seasoning

Salt and Pepper to taste

To Cook:

1. Brown your meat. Drain.

2. Add onions and garlic.

3. Add your seasonings now.

Taco Seasoning, salt and some pepper, if you like. I add Tony Cachere, garlic powder and black pepper.

4. Now you’ll want to add water.

You won’t want to go all crazy. Just add enough to be even with the meat. You won’t want to cover it. Keep it level. You want taco meat, not soup. 😉

5. Simmer for approx. 5 minutes or so.

Now you’re in business!

To make the Salad:

Get you some (that was the Cajun in me comin out;) shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes and shredded cheddar. If you’re not a THMer you can add a dollop of Sour Cream. If you are on THM this is an S and Satisfying it is!

P.S. don’t overdo your tomatoes since this is an S and tomatoes are carbs. 😉

Excellent! And I promise to be careful with the tomatoes. That’s easy now since the ones on our plants are still small and green. When my Romas start ripening, it may be a bit more difficult! I’ve shared your URL with others, too. Hope they start stopping by.

Oh gosh I love home grown tomatoes!! They are soooo delicious right off the vine and they smell sooo good! I can’t wait until we have some. Right now it’s still a little too cold here but as soon as it’s warmer the girls and I will be planting some in our new garden!

I am a THMer and I thought sour cream was ok in an S? Otherwise greek yogurt is a great option!
It is simmering on the stove as we speak! Thanks for the easy taco seasoning recipe. My boys love tacos!!

      Hi Angela!

I was told that Sour Cream was a no no because it’s a cow’s milk product and has sugar in it. I’ve always used it in moderation anyway, even when I lost 17 lbs doing THM. I use Greek Yogurt sometimes. It just doesn’t taste as happy to me as Sour Cream though. lol I hope y’all enjoyed your tacos! We’re having taco salad for lunch today! lol

Sour cream is ok on THM but don’t go crazy! I use a small dallop. Usually daisy It is on the list of thm s foods!

I was copying your seasoning recipe and was curious if the onion powder is 1/4 CUP? It didn’t specify, and I would hate to add too little or too much. So excited to add this recipe to my meal plan for next week! Thanks!

Sorry about that, Tracey! It’s 1/4 cup of onion powder. I’ll go fix that. Thank you for letting me know!

Hi, new TMH’er and was going through recipes trying to meal plan and my family loves taco salad soo this would be good. I can’t seem reconcile this in my brain what about avocado?? Would I be able to add some to this?

    • KristyQuinn April 20, 2015, 9:15 pm

Hey Becky 🙂 Avocado does have a few carbs but they are mostly fiber. My husband actually just researched this recently because my blood sugars started going wacky at the very end of my pregnancy. I would think that eating avocado with your taco salad, in moderation of course, would be just fine.
