Mama’s Little Secret Energy Drink (THM FP)

I am so excited to be sharing this information with you! I have learned so much from Pearl and Serene (authors of Trim Healthy Mama) which is where I first heard the word Matcha. As exotic as that word may sound, it’s simply powdered green tea, nothing else.
I read a little about it and was instantly interested and began checking my local health food stores to see if anyone carried it. Only one did. If those near you don’t, have no fear, you can find it easily using our trusty friend Google.
I will say that you might think Matcha is a wee bit pricey but when you see that a serving is as little as 1/4 tsp. that might just make the price much more appealing, as it did for me. One bag lasts a long time!
Now, I have to tell you just how much I love this stuff!!
It is amazing!
I don’t know about you but in my house as we approach dinner time I tend to get more tired and my kiddos seem to have found some hidden energy without sharing with their mama.
So not fair I tell you. lol Add the fact that I’m trying to recover from adrenal fatigue and it can be a recipe for an unhappy evening.
Each day the dinner yawns would approach and I would begin to daydream about Costco pizza and chocolate cake, both of which are uber-yummy and I wouldn’t have to prepare; both of which I do not need.
Then I began making this drink that I’m going to share with you.
It is life-changing!
Within an hour of drinking it I have energy and lots of it. Not the kind of jittery energy that caffeinated coffee can give. I’m actually so sensitive to caffeine in coffee that I don’t drink it unless it’s decaffeinated.
Mama’s Little Secret Energy Drink not only gives me energy for hours, but it (bizarrely enough) provides a sense of calm when I need it most. It is the oddest thing I tell you!
It has a light creamy vanilla flavor with just a hint of green tea flavor. It’s unbelievably yummy and so good for you!!
And here are some of the wonderful things about it…
  • Boosts metabolism and burns calories
  • Detoxifies effectively and naturally
  • Calms and relaxes
  • Enhances mood and aids in concentration
  • Provides vitamin C, selenium, chromium, zinc and magnesium
  • Fights against viruses and bacteria
  • Is rich in fiber
  • Lowers cholesterol and blood sugar
  • Does not raise insulin levels

Oh, and did I mention that if you’re a Trim Healthy Mama plan follower it’s a Fuel Pull?! Oh yeah!!!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • 1 cup unsweetened Almond Milk
  • 1/4 tsp. Matcha powder (I heap mine)
  • 1/2 Scoop Swanson Unsweetened Vanilla Protein Powder
  • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  • a dash of pure salt
  • pure white Stevia (to taste)
  1. Put all ingredients in a blender and blend for a couple of seconds. I then add a couple of ice cubes, just enough to cool the drink to perfection.
  2. Now drink and feel the difference!

*This drink is so awesome that I double the recipe and share with my hubby. (aka Mr. Meat and Potatoes, Sweet Tea and nothing green) He loves it!!!

Update: Due to all the inquiries I have had about this yummy drink, which I just so happened to have for breakfast yesterday with a yummy full scoop of SF vanilla Whey Protein powder, I am back on here to give y’all the link to the people that make the one I use. Here y’all go! Sei Mee Tea Just click on the link I gave you and you can read all about it at their website. Happy healthy drinking to you!!

What a good review of the drink. I shall have to try it now 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

    Tastes Great!

  • Jennifer Ronco November 25, 2013, 9:42 pm

This tastes like cake batter! I loved it and doubled the matcha!

  • Jennifer Ronco December 7, 2013, 12:27 am

Put a tbsp of cocoa in this today and it’s Soooo good! Love this! Thanks!

  • Queen of my Cabin December 7, 2013, 6:30 am

I never thought about adding cocoa! Cool. I’m glad you liked it! It’s been a life-saver for me on days I just feel like I’m dragging. I can’t say enough good things about Matcha powder. I’m so happy I took the plunge and bought it even though I was hesitant about the cost. It’s so worth it and you don’t have to use much!

I am wondering what is Matcha powder and could I substitute that with something else? Thanks !!

    • KristyQuinn April 1, 2014, 8:46 pm

      Hi Maggie,
I’m so glad you left a comment. I hadn’t realized that I didn’t write what Matcha powder is. Because of you I went back and edited the post. Thank you!

Matcha is pure green tea. You can’t substitute it in this drink because Matcha powder is what makes it the healthy energy drink it is. You could replace it with cocoa but you would have a chocolate milk and not a drink that will offer you so many amazing health benefits. Hope that helps!!

  • Katy June 20, 2014, 1:17 pm

Which one do you buy? Thanks!!!

    • KristyQuinn June 20, 2014, 2:59 pm

      Hi Katy,

The makers of the one I buy are ‘Sei Mee Tea.’ You can go to http://www.GroundGreeTea.com to read more. I buy it at a local grocery store in the health food section. I believe you can also buy it online if no stores sell it near you. 🙂

      Happy Friday!

  • Christy June 20, 2014, 1:25 pm

I do not like tea of any type, sweet tea, green tea, etc. Do you think I would be able to drink this? I would hate to buy it and not like the taste. Thanks.

    • KristyQuinn June 20, 2014, 2:57 pm

      Hi Christy,

I love teas and I drink a lot of them. Honestly though, I don’t think Matcha tastes like tea.. at all. It has a flavor all its own. I drink green tea and Matcha doesn’t taste like that either. It’s bizarre but true. So yes, I think there’s a very good chanced that you could drink this and love it. It tastes vanilla-y. 🙂 If you make it, I’d love to know what you think and if you like it!

      Have a good weekend!

  • Nicole Pelkey June 20, 2014, 1:31 pm

Yay for this drink!!!! Cant wait to try it. Im so mad at myself because I forgot to get Almond milk at the store yesterday and I woke up this morning plan in on a FAD and couldn’t make one…now I see yhis! Ugh! Gonna have to get some later on today to enjoy all these yummies!! I won two bags of free Organic Matcha powder a few mo ths ago!! Awesome benefits 🙂

    • KristyQuinn June 20, 2014, 2:55 pm

lol, That’s funny! I’m not doing THM fully right now and I would freak out without my almond milk! lol I do sugar free the majority of the time unless the hubby’s home. I was stressing way too much about not loosing weight while doing it. My weight loss seriously just stopped. I then found out I had a thyroid issue. So I decided to remove what stress I could.

You’ll LOVE this drink!! I made it yesterday for a quick breakfast with a whole scoop of protein powder. I am so sensitive to normal caffeine that I can’t drink it. This has more but it’s different and it doesn’t bother me at all! Congrats on winning two bags of Matcha!! My girls like it used in THM pudding too!

      Have a blessed weekend mama!!

  • Deb June 20, 2014, 1:45 pm

Hi, was wondering which matcha tea do you get? Thanks

    • KristyQuinn June 20, 2014, 2:39 pm

      Hi Deb,

The brand of Matcha I buy is called Sei Mee Tea. You can go to http://www.GroundGreenTea.com to read more. I bought in the health food section of a grocery store here called Rosauers. The name of the brand is very small on the back so it’s not easy to spot. 🙂 Have a blessed Friday!

  • Virginia Kimble June 20, 2014, 3:59 pm

Soooo did I miss a link to where I can get this yummy concoction???

    • KristyQuinn June 20, 2014, 5:32 pm

      Hey Virginia 🙂

I just added the link to the brand I buy. It’s now in the post at the bottom!

      Happy Friday!

  • Lana.S. June 20, 2014, 6:34 pm

Thanks so much for this post! I am fairly new THM-er,4 months, and Have recently been diagnosed with a couple heath issues that now have me cutting caffeine out of my day…. I have been doing one cup a day , not only for the taste but because I NEED IT! I am a mother of two and my youngest (3) keeps me going! I also have been looking for something to give me energy to make it through the day without feeling like I need a nap. Thanks again, I cant wait to give this a try!

  • Darlene June 20, 2014, 10:50 pm

Kristy, could you please tell me the page # in THM? I missed it and it’s not in the index…thanks for this. So looking forward to trying it. Blessings on your journey.

    • KristyQuinn June 21, 2014, 12:43 am

      Hey Darlene,

I would be glad to tell you the page if it was in the book but it’s not. lol It’s my own little creation. 🙂 The recipe’s in the post. Enjoy! You’ll love it!!

  • Tammy June 21, 2014, 12:57 am

Hi there. The store was out of the powdered matcha so I got matcha tea bags instead. I made a cup of tea and added it to the drink. Since it was liquid I only used 1/2cup of almond milk. Tasted good. Do you think the benefits will be the same? Thanks!

    • KristyQuinn June 21, 2014, 3:52 am

      Hi Tammy,

Matcha tea bags, how neat! I’ve never seen those. I would assume that the benefits are the same, iof not the same, at least close. 🙂

  • Lisa June 27, 2014, 11:54 pm

I can’t wait to try this! If you drink this to late in the day, will it keep you awake at night?

    • KristyQuinn June 28, 2014, 12:17 am

Hm, honestly I’ve never had it later than 6pm-ish so I’m not sure. It doesn’t make me jittery or jumpy. I simply don’t feel draggy when I drink it. The caffeine in Matcha powder doesn’t affect me like caffeine in Luzzianne tea or coffee. It’s way milder in my opinion. I can’t even drink regular coffee anymore because I am so sensitive to the caffeine. Hope that helps! 🙂

  • Jennifer June 28, 2014, 8:05 pm

Hi Kristy! Absolutely loving this drink! Thanks so much for sharing! I purchased the Sei Mee Tea brand and it’s great. However I was wondering, do you think this is the same thing (link below)? Just different brand? It seems a little less expensive and you get more oz!

    • KristyQuinn June 28, 2014, 10:47 pm

      Hey Jennifer!

I’m glad you like the drink! I checked out the link you gave me and honestly I don’t know. It looks good to me. Once you try it I’d love to know how it works for you. As a one-income military family, I am always looking for good ways to save money! That Matcha def. looks like a good deal!

      • Jennifer June 29, 2014, 12:44 am

Oh dear, I checked out the reviews on amazon and it looks like people are not happy with it because it has Organic Brown Rice Solids in it. So it’s not 100% Matcha I guess. Comparatively, I looked on the back of the Sei Mee Matcha bag and it says 100% USDA Organic Matcha. Bummer! I’m sorry I spoke too soon! I’ll keep an eye out for deals in the future though and let you know if I find anything! I definitely love a good bargain too. 🙂

        • KristyQuinn July 1, 2014, 12:48 pm

Lol, No problem! My father taught me the saying, “You get what you pay for,” years ago. I have learned that he was right. The good thing is that even though Matcha is somewhat pricey, it lasts a long time! I like that!! Especially since money doesn’t grow on trees. I find that a bummer all in itself! lol

  • Adelia July 2, 2014, 6:00 pm

I made this yummy little drink just a bit ago! Thanks so much for sharing!

    • KristyQuinn July 3, 2014, 2:55 pm

You’re welcome Adelia! I’m glad you enjoyed it!

  • Jody Dake August 25, 2014, 2:19 pm

Hi Kristy! I haven’t heard of Matcha before, but wanting to give it a try. I order lots from Swanson vitamins and they have it, but I am ordering it from your source this 1st time since you know it is good. I may try the other brand later. I still haven’t been able to get ahold of my “health” issues, but have found a couple vitamin energy supplements from Swansons so at least I am off of my diet drinks. Yay! I never got a handle on THM yet either, going to give it another go…we’ll see.
Hope all is well with you and your sweet family! 🙂

    Always Experiencing Him,

    • KristyQuinn August 25, 2014, 9:41 pm

Hey Jody! I hope you and yours are doing well!

I love Swanson’s. That’s where I buy my protein powder and a few other things. With Matcha powder, I love the brand I have. At first I almost didn’t buy it because we have to be so careful with our money but I’m glad I did. It’s so good and it lasts quite a while which is nice! Not too long ago I met the owner of Sei Mei Tea. She is a sweet, sweet woman who began her research into Green Tea because her husband was very ill. She did it for his health and to heal him and then she saw how powerful the effects were of green tea so she made it a business to offer high quality Matcha and other products to the public. She’s a neat woman and her products are high quality. If you buy another brand, just make sure you check the labels. Some have additives. You’ll love the drink no matter how you drink it!

I love THM but it is costly when you have a large family. I implement a lot of how I eat right now from it. We’re struggling to be Gluten free right now which ups the cost of everything for us. I’m always watching my blood sugar too which doesn’t help. God is so good though!

It was nice hearing from you!

  • val March 14, 2015, 9:31 pm

really yummy..made with cashew milk..it still was!

    • KristyQuinn March 25, 2015, 4:25 pm

I’ve never had cashew milk. I bet it’s yummy!

  • Keri May 19, 2015, 5:53 pm

Would this be a S with the full scoop of protein powder??

    • KristyQuinn May 20, 2015, 1:29 am

Hey Keri! It would still be a FP even with an entire scoop of protein powder. 🙂

  • Maggie Pearson January 10, 2017, 7:49 pm

I’ve started THM, and in a search for energy drinks, I’ve discovered yours. Thank you! It’s my daily go-to now. First thing in the morning and during the day if I need an energy assist. Wow! (And BTW I DESPISED Matcha before this.)

    • KristyQuinn January 10, 2017, 8:19 pm

Aw, I’m so glad that the recipe has blessed you. That drink saved me many an evening while I was cooking dinner!

  • Mary March 5, 2017, 10:53 pm

So was this filling enough for a meal? Did it satisfy for 3 hrs until next time to eat?

    • KristyQuinn March 13, 2017, 4:35 pm

No, it wasn’t but it could be if you wanted. I would just suggest adding a scoop of your favorite Protein powder! 🙂

  • Jamie March 9, 2017, 11:14 pm

I just made this & LOVE it!! The only thing I did different was add 1/4 tsp of orange extract & 1/4 tsp vanilla. It’s like a creamsicle!! Thank you for sharing!!

    • KristyQuinn March 13, 2017, 4:36 pm

      Oh yummy!

  • Ginny September 18, 2017, 11:17 pm

Please, what measurement / kind of stevia did you start with (just as a starting place for me)?

    • KristyQuinn September 21, 2017, 12:35 am

Hi Ginny! I honestly don’t remember what amount I started with and I haven’t made it in awhile because I’ve been pregnant for the majority of 3 years and I don’t drink Matcha while pregnant. (I miss it!) Typically when I’m only using stevia to sweeten my drinks I will just taste to see how I like it. When I first started THM I used KAL which is what I’m using now I believe. I like the Organic one.

  • Sara June 7, 2018, 5:12 pm

Do you get their Matcha for Modern Warriors version, or the ginger, lemon, mint, ginseng, rosehip, guarana, etc.?

    • KristyQuinn June 8, 2018, 3:10 am

No. I got a totally different brand. Right now I am using an Organic one from Walmart.
