Homemade Baby Formula… The First Weeks

There’s no argument that breast milk is best for babies but when a mom can’t breastfeed she has no choice but to feed her baby something else.

“I’m so grateful that I live in a day and age that my inability to breastfeed my child isn’t a death sentence to her.”

This is my world.

Six of the seven babies I’ve birthed have all had super sensitive stomachs including baby Joshua. Over the years we have tried many different formulas.

  • Similac
  • Similac Alimentum
  • Isomil
  • Gerber Good Start
  • Gerber Good Start Sensitive
  • Enfamil
  • Nutramigen
  • Earth’s Best Organic
  • Earth’s Best Organic Sensitive

Although some were better than others none got rid of our babies tummy upset. We longed for their first birthdays so we could give them cows milk and watch their stomach troubles go away.

Over the past few years I knew of a family that had healthy, thriving babies and they made their own formula. This piqued my interest yet in all honesty I was a little weirded out by the idea.  However, after seeing how well their babies were doing on it I approached my husband about it.

He told me to research it and I did. A… lot! What I found was a really large amount of positive reviews.

We prayed… and prayed some more… and then used store bought formula… which upset Joshua’s tummy. We then searched high and low for the sensitive kind of the organic formula and it too did the same thing. Something in there was bothering him. He couldn’t have a bowel movement without starting to cry. 🙁

Soon Mr Tea, as in Luzianne tea, (aka the hubby) was online ordering 1/2 a year supply of do it yourself baby formula. They would ship us everything we needed other than raw cows milk, raw cream (you can also use any good quality cream) and the homemade whey, which is super simple to make.

We put Joshua on the homemade formula when he was only 3 weeks old. Mind you he was born a little over a month early so he was a preemie.

We have been weighing Joshua weekly since he came home. I am here to tell you that today at 9 weeks old he weighed 10 lbs and 11 oz!

That last picture was just for fun!

I think this all natural formula might be making him smarter than he would have been. He’s already smiling and laughing.  lol

He is doing phenomenal on the formula as you can see. My husband and I couldn’t be more happy that we took the plunge. At first making the formula seems a tad bit overwhelming but now I could do it in my sleep.

It is SUPER easy to do!

Unlike store bought formula you have to work at this, purchasing what you need regularly and making the formula every day to every other day.  As a new mom with adrenal fatigue this was getting overwhelming. So what I did was make a batch to freeze almost every time I made him formula. This has been such a blessing! Life happens and having bags of frozen formula in the freezer has been so helpful.

If this is something you might be interested in here’s a video showing how easy it is to make the formula. 🙂

Homemade Baby Formula

*Remember, I am not a doctor. The statements above are just my experience with the homemade formula. It may not be right for every baby. If your baby is having issues on formula you may want to seek medical advice from a pediatrician. Severe tummy upset could be a sign of something more serious.*
